Wuhan City, abbreviated as “Han” and also known as “Jiangcheng,” is a prefecture-level city and the provincial capital of Hubei Province. It serves as a central city in China's central region, a national historical and cultural city, an international comprehensive transportation hub city, the economic center, science and technology innovation center, commerce and logistics center, foreign exchange center, and Yangtze River midstream shipping center of central China, as well as a comprehensive innovation and reform pilot zone.

Wuhan is located in the eastern part of the Jianghan Plain and the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, where the Yangtze River and its largest tributary, the Han River, converge, forming the “Three Towns of Wuhan” (Wuchang, Hankou, and Hanyang) that stand across the river from each other. The city is crisscrossed by rivers and lakes, with water areas accounting for one-fourth of the total city area, earning it the title of an international wetland city. As China's economic and geographical center, Wuhan is known as the “Hub of Nine Provinces,” serving as China's largest inland water, land, and air transportation hub. Its high-speed rail network covers most of China and connects directly to all five continents worldwide.

Wuhan is an important birthplace of Chu culture. Since the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period, it has been a major military and commercial hub in southern China. During the Yuan Dynasty, it became the provincial capital of Huguang Province. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, it was hailed as “the most prosperous place in Chu” and one of the “Four Great Cities of the World.” The opening of Hankou Port and the Self-Strengthening Movement during the late Qing Dynasty marked the beginning of Wuhan's modernization process, establishing it as a major economic center in modern China. Wuhan was the birthplace of the Xinhai Revolution and has repeatedly served as a national political, military, and cultural center throughout modern history.
